Lots of Updates . . . April 2023

My web site is about 6 years out of date, I have not had a chance to get get to it! In 2022 I had two shows, one part of Upstate Art Weekend: showed my sculpture Myopic Sea at the Frank Institute, CR10 Arts.. In August I was a featured artist in The Hudson Eye Festival; had a solo show of nine 5’x6’ oil paintings, a sonic sculpture, plus my ceramic trucks at the Hudson Milliner Art Salon in Hudson. Coming up April 29th-30th will have an open studio as part of the Kinderhook Memorial Library Art Tour. Hope to hop on here again soon to add many new works and give the site a fresh look. Happy Spring!

Great write up in the Times Union by Michael Lindsay-Hogg about my Officials of Torture oil portraits at Time & Space Limited.

Officials of Torture show at TSL in Hudson

Currently showing at Time and Space Limited in Hudson, New York: Officials of Torture. 18 portraits in oils all painted in 2015, save for the portrait of Gina Haspel. Each person depicted was in the George W. Bush administration and responsible for either legitimizing, devising, executing or covering up torture of detainees at Guantanamo or Black Sites around the world . . . in the name of the U.S. It is known that at least two deaths resulted from this torture, and those tortured were never tried or found guilty of any crime in a trial by jury. Not a one of those responsible for implementing the torture program were tried, convicted or sent to prison for their crimes. In fact, most hold (or held) prestigious positions afterwards at Universities, corporations and even the U.S. Government. This show has no end date as yet. Opening will be announced once an unrelated artwork by SK is installed in another space within the gallery.

Defense of the Nail-a-thon in The Villager!

The Nail-a-thon to Disempower Trump, which took place on April 8th was a great success. Scores of people on the streets of NYC hammered a nail into the Trump Blockhead that I made, I had a great band of musicians who made quirky fun music for the event,  and everyone was having fun, but the one person who didn't like it wrote about it in NYC paper The Villager. When it was brought to my attention, I wrote a defense of it, and you can read it here.

Official Video of Sandra Koponen's Nail-a-thon!

The video of Sandra Koponen's Nail-a-thon: A Public Ritual to Disempower Dump and Co., which took place on April 8, 2017 is now up for viewing!  If you watch the whole thing you will be rewarded towards the end of the video by seeing the youngest, cutest little nailer!  Hopefully the sculpture will be on view at an upcoming solo art show. (TBA)  Watch the Nail-a-thon here

Nail-a-thon: A Public Ritual to Disempower Dump and Co.

On April 8, 2017, artist Sandra Koponen took her sculpture of the Trump Blockhead in the rat mobile to the streets of the East Village of NYC. With the fanfare of musicians Kenny Wollesen,, Dalius Naujo, Jessica Lurie and Matt Cole, the public was invited to hammer a nail into the head. There were also cabinet members and backers traiing behind the car in rat traps and people were also invited to hammer some carpet tacks into them. After a couple hours, the Trump Blockhead was covered in nails. It was all done in a joyous spirit. Video will be posted soon.

New! Officials of Torture web site is now LIVE!!

At last, you can see Officials of Torture: Oil Portraits by Sandra Koponen on-line,  with accompanying explanatory text. As the U.S. enters the 2016 presidential race, it is important to bear in mind that at least one of those Bush administration officials responsible for implementing the  CIA torture program---Paul Wolfowitz--is an advisor to presidential candidate Jeb Bush.  One of the purposes of this project is to remind the public of those architects of the Bush -era torture program so that hopefully, their power and influence can be curbed.
